Symbolism

SYMBOLISM
Ring
See Item 28
- The Ring is the symbol of dreams coming true and an avenue out of reality.
- Like in the story of El Dorado- the city of gold- “its mystery lives on as a symbol for every goal beyond attainment; every dream beyond reality”
- The ring helps Steven to see himself as something better than he feels he is “every goal beyond attainment”
- The ring also helps him to see into the life of Jan Pelgrom and Ela – he sees this in his dreams or “every dream beyond reality”. IS this reality or is it a fantasy ?

Cannibal Pot – symbol for death-

Vacancy Sign- like in horror movies, the flashing vacancy sign is a symbol for something bad being about to happen. It sets the mood for suspense.

  1. Steven thinks of the ring as his El Dorado as it makes him become the other steven... every thing he wanted to be every dream beyond attanment..... BELL .... G2g ... to be continued with long boring sentences .., (i can't spell)

  2. Symbolism is a major theme in the text. One example being the VACANCY sign and how is creates suspense, like in horror films. When Gary Crew mentions the sign flashing it makes you feel as though something bad is about to happen.
    AAAAHHHHHH!

  3. Strange Objects, by Gary Crew has many types of symbolism. I am going to mention three things.
The first thing is the golden ring. It represents gold and dreams coming true. The story of El Dorado, the city of gold is all about the coming true of dreams: “its mystery lives on as a symbol for every goal beyond attainment; every dream beyond reality”
Steven keeps the golden ring because it makes him have dreams of himself as a better, cooler and happier person. He sees himself in white jeans and a red t-shirt standing by the vacancy sign at the motel, where his mother works. He also sees the past lives of Jan Pelgrom (the boy who used to own the ring) as well as Wouter Loos and Ela.
The second type of symbolism is the canibal pot. This represents death.
And lastly is the vacancy sign. Whenever Gary Crew talks about the vacancy sign in the novel, it means that something terrible is going to happen. Similar to what happens in scary movies. When a vacancy sign appears it means something bad will happen. This also happens in Strange Objects.
These are all types of symbolism in the text. =)

The ring symbolises dreams coming true, like in El Dorado. A symbol for"Every goal beyond attainment and every dream beyond reality."
    The Cannibal pot symolises death.
The Vacancy sign...like in the movies, represents and sets us up for soething bed to happen.
